Screen Toaster makes it possible to make videos and screen casts for free. Many screen casts have to be made with expensive software, however Screen Toaster is changing all this, and it makes it possible for anyone to easily and quickly create screen casts for free. The best thing about this application is that you can make the screen casts without needing to download anything. This makes it completely unique compared to the other applications out there.Show more screenshots »
ScreenToaster is a french start-up whose offices are established in the heart of Paris, France. They launched a privately funded prototype in 2008 and have raised their first round of capital from angel investors in September 2008. After a few months of private Beta testing the application was publicly launched in January 2009. ScreenToaster.com was shut down in 2011.
Screen Toaster is unique because there is no need to download anything before you can start filming screen casts. Another huge advantage is that the software has social networking functions built into it. This makes it possible to share your screen casts with people in a similar way to YouTube. Screen casts can also be downloaded and shared on other more conventional video sharing sites if required. The geek functions are great fun if you want some more advanced features, it’s even possible to record from a VNC server, which might be useful… maybe.
The application is one of the easiest ways to make screen casts; you start by logging into your account. You can then click the big record button and it will then start to load a Java Applet. This does take quite a long time. During this process you will be asked whether you want to trust this application, click run and you should get into the application itself. You’re then ready to record, you can just hit the record button, or use the shortcut keys which are Alt and S to start recording. Recording then occurs automatically and can be identified with an R below the cursor. When you want to stop recording then you can either press Alt and S again to pause the video, or just click the stop button. When you have your video you can then edit it by adding subtitles. It’s also very easy to start a new recording. Once you’ve finished the videos can be uploaded to screen toaster and/or YouTube. It’s worth noting however that there’s a lack of editing features it’s not possible for example to remove parts of the video. The video can also be downloaded to your computer.
Registering for an account with Screen Toaster is very easy. You start by clicking the “Register” link at the top of the page and then fill out the short form. This includes details for your username, password and email address. You also need to check the box to accept the terms. Your account will be fully active, however unless you click the link in your email within 7 days the account will be deleted.
Using Screen Toaster is completely free; there are no paid subscription options
Screen Toaster is a very valuable application for anyone that needs to make screen casts. This is great for software designers, or support people. Being free it makes Camtasia look very expensive in deed.
